2. Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API):

  - Definition: An API refers to the active substance in a pharmaceutical drug that produces the intended therapeutic effect. It is the pharmacologically active compound responsible for the treatment or prevention of a disease or condition.

  - Role: The API is the core component of a drug formulation that delivers the desired pharmacological effect. It is the main active substance in the medication and is responsible for its therapeutic action.

  - Characteristics: APIs are highly purified and undergo rigorous quality control measures to ensure their safety, efficacy, and consistency. These substances are formulated with other excipients (inactive ingredients) to create the final dosage form, such as tablets, capsules, injections, or topical preparations.


In summary, pharmaceutical intermediates are the intermediate compounds formed during the synthesis of APIs.
